Make Every Month National Adopt Rescued Guinea Pigs Month!

March is the official time to get more homeless guinea pigs into forever homes but here we like to celebrate cavy adoption every day of the year. Join us in our campaign to help small animals.

March 2012 was the tenth annual Adopt-A-Rescued-Guinea Pig Month but here you can celebrate it every day. The event began in 2002 when the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) declared the month devoted to raising awareness about guinea pigs in shelters and about pet cavies in general. Here at Guinea Pig Today, we're taking this event one step further because owning a single guinea pig is not enough. Guinea pigs are social animals and should be kept in pairs. For this reason, we're not celebrating National Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month but National Adopt Rescued Guinea Pigs Month.

Guinea pigs are rewarding pets when cared for properly. Many can be found in rescues and shelters around the world, waiting for their forever home. We hope the information in these pages inspires you to learn more throughout the year as we continue the campaign to educate the world on guinea pig adoption.

Guinea pigs, also called a cavy, are rodents that are not in the pig family, nor are they from Guinea. They come from the Andes and are the descendants of a closely related species of cavy that no longer exists naturally in the wild.
